What don’t families don’t understand about aging – #Earlyconversations

March 26th, 2014

What is it that most families don’t understand?  Most families are under the impression that their aging relative does not want to discuss, think about and plan for aging as part of a family team. However, I have found that once the difficult conversations are started, most family members feel relieved and more connected.  This translates to more appropriate and effective care and advocacy once somebody falls ill.  It also gives the family caregiver increased confidence to reach out to other care partners and family members to ensure that the senior’s needs are met. This may take a few attempts but persistence can bring many rewards within the family such as deeper emotional connections and improved understanding as to who we are now and when we age.
