Every week, I review the most recent articles and blogs that have been posted on-line.  Here is the information that I found to be the most useful for my clients, readers, and other professionals working with seniors.  Enjoy! – Stephanie Erickson

The article, “Aging Parents: Reversing the Roles”, written by Karin Mizgala, a financial planner who also has a degree in psychology, clearly outlines the steps to take to speak to your aging parents NOW about planning for their futures, should their health deteriorate.  I appreciate her comments on remembering to support your parent’s independence during all decisions. http://moneywatch.bnet.com/retirement-planning/article/12-tough-questions-to-ask-your-parents/338020/#comments

This article in the NY Times, written by Anne C. Roark, discusses the many layers of emotional and physical stress long distance caregiving can take on multiple family members.  I enjoyed reading it as Ms.Roark has a way of drawing the reader into her world.  She writes about living far from her frail and aging mother, and the steps she took to support her from a distance. http://newoldage.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/being-there-and-far-away/?hp

This article from The Washington Post discusses new scientific discoveries in Alzheimer’s Disease research, further validating that genes play an important role in developing the disease.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wpdyn/content/article/2009/09/06/AR2009090601160.html

The U.S. News and World Report published an article that referenced research being done on how memory and other cognitive exercises may help to reduce the onset of Dementia.  Keep doing those crossword puzzles!  http://www.usnews.com/articles/science/medical-science/2009/08/03/brain-exercises-may-delay-dementia.html

Here is another article, written by Matt Krantz for USA Today, confirming that pre-planning and organizing our financial future, and that of our parents, is essential!  This article addresses protecting assets when someone enters a nursing home.  Very valuable!http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/columnist/krantz/2009-08-10-protect-aging-parent-assets_N.htm
